When a tooth and its root are both lost, an implant with a ceramic crown is the closest replacement to the original. It looks like a tooth, it is cleaned like a tooth, and it transmits force into the jaw like a tooth.

How it works

A titanium root is placed into the jawbone in the position the natural root occupied. Bone grows onto its surface and holds it. A custom ceramic crown is then attached.

In suitable cases a one-piece implant can be used, where the components are installed as a single unit. That means immediately functioning teeth, a shorter overall treatment, and less discomfort along the way.

Why an implant rather than a bridge

A bridge replaces the crown of the missing tooth but not its root, and it borrows support from the teeth beside it. Those teeth have to be cut down to carry it. An implant replaces the root as well, stands independently, and leaves healthy teeth alone.

Bone is the other argument. A natural root stimulates the bone around it every time you bite. When the root is gone, that stimulus stops and the bone slowly resorbs. An implant restores it.
